Woman shot in the head in Clifton drive-by was an ‘innocent bystander’, NYPD says

STATEN ISLAND, NY – A 52-year-old woman clings to life on Tuesday after being shot in the head in the lobby of an apartment building in Clifton, police say.
The woman, who was in the lobby and lived across the street, was not the intended target of the drive-by shooting, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
“Last night an innocent bystander was shot and killed in the lobby of 225 Park Hill Ave.,” a post on the NYPD’s 120th Precinct Twitter feed said.
She was in critical condition after sustaining a single gunshot wound to the head and then being rushed to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze. His injury is considered life-threatening, according to police.
A white SUV drove up in front of the building at 225 Park Hill Ave. Monday shortly before 7 p.m., then several bullets were fired from the vehicle, an NYPD spokesperson said.
Bullets passed through the lobby window and one of them hit the victim in the head, according to the police spokesman.
Additional shells damaged four parked cars that were in front of this building. The SUV then drove away from the scene, the police spokesman said.
Detectives are trying to determine the motive and determine who the intended target was, the source said.
Police described the car as a small white SUV.
A source with knowledge of the investigation said the SUV could be a Kia Sorrento.
A police spokesperson was unable to provide a description of one or more suspects or even the number of people in the SUV.
The fact that several 9mm rounds were fired suggests that more than one person fired from the car, the source said.
