Security officials warn right-wing parade in Jerusalem could “set the region on fire”
Former security officials warn against allowing a planned right-wing nationalist march in Jerusalem later this week, warning that it could fuel a wider Israeli-Palestinian conflagration over the city.
March of the Flag organizers postponed the controversial annual parade to Thursday after this year’s Jerusalem Day event was canceled mid-event after Hamas fired rockets at the city on May 10, triggering 11 days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip.
“Especially with Jerusalem, any unusual incident can set the region on fire and lead to escalation in both [the West Bank] and the Band and therefore responsibility, sensitivity and common sense are needed to make decisions without political interference, ”an anonymous security source told public broadcaster Kan.
The broadcaster also quoted a military source as saying that the Israel Defense Forces remained on high alert in the West Bank and the Gaza border area, saying these areas had “still not calmed down or fully stabilized.”
