Protests erupt at the Western Wall after Labor MP brought Torah for women to read
Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israelis demonstrate against the Western Wall after Labor MP Gilad Kariv used his parliamentary immunity to bring a Torah scroll to the Western Wall plaza.
Kariv, an ordained Reform rabbi and leader of the Reform movement in Israel, plans to turn it over to the pro-pluralism group Women of the Wall, to use during their prayer service, in violation of the shrine’s policy.
In a video statement, Kariv calls on the government to advance an egalitarian place at the Western Wall. Plans for such a move were reportedly scrapped last year.
“It’s time for those close to the Prime Minister [Naftali Bennett] stop sucking the ultra-Orthodox parties,” Kariv says.
At least two people have been arrested by police, according to video footage. There is no immediate comment from law enforcement on this.

Diaspora Minister Nachman Shai said on Twitter that he was “saddened by the scenes at the Western Wall this morning. The situation there is unfair. All Jews deserve a place on this site to pray according to their customs. The western wall plan must be implemented.
