Prosecutors offer $10,000 and ask public for help in unsolved 2018 murder
On a horrific day in August 2018 in Newark, Godfrey L. Jones was found shot dead on a bench in Weequahic Park. Discovered at 9:15 a.m., he was declared dead at the CHU at 5:27 p.m. the same day.
Jones’ murder was the first of three murders to Newark in 24 hours.
Today, more than two years later, Jones’ murder remains unsolved and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office is asking for the public’s help. For information leading to the arrest of the individuals who shot Jones, the bureau will award up to $10,000, he announced Friday.
Investigators said two men approached Jones and one of them shot him, but no further information was available.
Prosecutors made the same plea and reward offer earlier this year in March. The request was made by Acting Essex County District Attorney Theodore N. Stephens, Newark Director of Public Safety Anthony F. Ambrose and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
The bureau asked anyone with information about any of the cases to call the county’s Homicide/Major Crime Task Force Tip Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847 -7432.
