Palestinian teenager shot dead in Israeli raid in occupied West Bank

Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli troops shot and killed 17-year-old Palestinian in raid in occupied West Bank
JERUSALEM – Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian teenager as clashes erupted when they entered a volatile city in the occupied West Bank early Saturday, the Palestinian health ministry and local media said.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has stepped up nighttime raids in the northern West Bank city of Jenin in recent months.
The ministry identified the dead teenager as 17-year-old Amjad al-Fayyed. He said an 18-year-old Palestinian was in critical condition after being injured by Israeli gunfire.
Local media reported that clashes erupted outside the Jenin refugee camp as Israeli forces stormed the area. It was not immediately clear how al-Fayyed was shot.
Israel says it is carrying out “counterterrorism activities” to detain wanted militants and planners of recent deadly attacks in the West Bank and Israel.
On May 11, a veteran Palestinian journalist with the Al Jazeera satellite channel was killed while covering an Israeli military operation in Jenin. Shireen Abu Akleh’s family, the broadcaster, the Palestinian Authority and witnesses accused Israel of shooting the Qatari channel’s correspondent. Israel accused Palestinian militants of shooting the journalist, but then backtracked.
Israeli military officials said Thursday that the army had identified a soldier’s rifle that may have killed Abu Akleh, but said that can only be certain if the Palestinians hand over the bullet for analysis.
