Long Beach Opera promotes Derrell Acon to associate director – press telegram
Long Beach Opera has promoted Dr Derrell Acon to Associate Director and Head of Impact, effective immediately.
At the same time, he was appointed Associate Artistic Director and Creative Producer of Heartbeat Opera. New York-based LBO and Heartbeat will announce joint projects in the future.
In his work at the LBO, he will work with new Artistic Director and Creative Director James Darrah to plan and organize the artistic production of the opera. He will also continue to oversee ancillary programs such as Community Conversations.
“I’m so ready to start collaborating with Derrell on planning and art projects in this new role,” Darrah said in a statement. “… I am delighted to integrate his bold and visionary work as a singer, musician and creative producer into the evolving artistic identity of LBO. “
Acon has produced several events on LBO projects. In addition to his administrative work, he has acted in such works as the LBO directing of “The Central Park Five”. He has also appeared on stage in Hawaii, Dresden, Munich, Haifa, Frankfurt and other places.
“My greatest hope is that my new roles at LBO and Heart Opera… will help spark far-reaching change…” Acon said in the statement. “We should all continue to push for more black voices in artistic, production and board leadership. The need remains urgent.
Acon has several degrees, including a doctorate and a master’s degree in music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory. He is also a consultant to performing arts groups and co-founder and leader of the Black Opera Alliance.
Acon was the creative producer of a short visual album, “amor y alma,” a celebration of the beauty and empowerment of black and Latin women, which was released on Friday, June 18, in conjunction with June 10.
