Indonesia releases Iranian-flagged tanker arrested for illegally transferring oil
JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesian authorities say two tankers – the Iranian-flagged MT Horse and the Panamanian-flagged MT Freya – have been released after four months of detention for illegally transferring oil into Indonesian waters.
The two ships were released yesterday and their captains were allowed to leave although they were sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday for failing to comply with waterway regulations, said Wisnu Pramandita, spokesman for the Indonesian Maritime Safety Agency.
“They were released on condition. They don’t need to be physically imprisoned, but they can’t commit the same violation over the next two years, ”he says.
Iranian state television and the oil ministry’s SHANA news agency report that MT Horse has resumed his mission and will return home after completing it.
The MT Horse and MT Freya were arrested at the end of January along with 36 Iranian and 25 Chinese crew. Days later, the Chinese government called on Indonesia to treat the Chinese sailors fairly, but gave no indication of what their tanker was doing when it was found at sea transferring fuel from the Iranian vessel.
