Josh Cohen named Israel Footballer of the Year
From “Remember him?” Reports, there has been some big news recently about a former Sacramento Republic FC player. Goalkeeper Josh Cohen was named Israel’s Footballer of the Year, the top individual award, after an outstanding season with Maccabi Haifa.
Cohen was Maccabi Haifa’s No.1 as he won the top Israel title this season. Although they’ve been near the top of the standings for the past few seasons, they hadn’t won the league title since 2010-11, so that was a pretty big accomplishment in and of itself.
Cohen, who played 29 league games this season, recorded 16 clean sheets, a terrific comeback, and Maccabi Haifa have just edged out the title competition, so his contributions have been immense.

Cohen’s selection as Player of the Season has also been one of the closest ever, but given that goalkeepers rarely win all-round individual awards, it’s quite remarkable that he got the green light at all. Kudos to the 28-year-old California native for winning the league title and footballer of the year award, and keep doing your thing.
