Israel announces discovery of new Covid variant – Middle East Monitor

The Israeli Ministry of Health revealed yesterday that it had discovered a new “unidentified” variant of Covid, with two travelers infected with it at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.
The ministry said in a statement that the “mild symptoms” of the virus combine and both infected people had symptoms including fever, headache and muscle aches.
However, he said he continues to follow these two cases in an effort to identify more symptoms of the new variant.
Israel‘s official radio quoted the head of the Health Ministry’s coronavirus task force, Salman Zarka, as saying that “the phenomenon of combined variants is well known. At this point we are not concerned about [the new variant leading to] serious cases.”

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has announced his intention to hold a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Health, following the increase in the number of covid cases around the world.
In early February, Israel ended covid restrictions and the requirement to show vaccination status before going to cafes, restaurants, bars, gyms and hotels, but it maintained this procedure in other places such than concert halls and cinemas, according to France 24.
The Israeli government is expected to make a decision in the coming days to drop PCR tests for travelers entering the country.
