Some 293 new cases of the coronavirus were identified in Israel on Tuesday, out of around 63,000 tests carried out according to an update from the Health Ministry on Wednesday. Both numbers are similar to the previous day and are the highest of those numbers for about two months.

In the past two weeks, since the start of several epidemics in Israeli schools, the number of new carriers of the virus identified daily has risen from 10 or 20 to the current figures, while active cases have risen from less than 200 to around 200. of 1,800. However, the number of severe patients remained stable between 20 and 25 – in the first half of April, there were still around 150.

At the same time, the vaccination campaign has also picked up speed. Nearly 20,000 injections were given on Tuesday, also the highest in two months. More than half of them were given to children between the ages of 12 and 15, whose inoculation is considered by the government to be a high priority and an important tool to prevent further epidemics. The cohort represents a high number of current active cases. So far, some 77,000 people have received their first dose, out of a population of around 550,000.

Also on Wednesday, the Health Ministry announced that two guests who stayed at the Leonardo Hotel in the Dead Sea between June 23-26 and participated in the dance activities at the hotel tested positive for the virus. . Anyone who also attended the activities was asked to get tested even if they have no symptoms or have been vaccinated or have recovered.

Unvaccinated people had to be quarantined, while people considered fully immune were told to self-isolate until they received test results.

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the Knesset extended the validity of the laws regarding the pandemic by five months.

In addition, on Wednesday, the Constitution and Law Committee discussed the government’s decision to declare the violation of the travel ban to banned countries a criminal sanction without seeking parliamentary approval.

“This red line will not be crossed any more: the next time that happens, we will cancel the sanction,” said the chairman of the committee, Labor MP Gilad Kariv.

Earlier this week, a NIS 5,000 fine was approved for those traveling to travel-banned countries – currently Argentina, Brazil, India, Mexico, Russia and South Africa – without obtaining the required authorization from the designated special government committee.
