U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced an amendment to the U.S. Defense Budget Bill that would suspend the $ 735 million transfer of Boeing Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) to Israel earlier this week.

JDAMs are kits that convert unguided bombs into precision guided munitions.

In this year’s NDAA, I introduced 7 changes, including blocking specific US arms transactions for:
– The Saudi government after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi
– The Colombian government on its violent crackdown on demonstrators, &
– Israeli government on bombardment of Palestinian civilians, media centers https://t.co/eMHIApDLAk

The amendment was introduced alongside six other amendments, including an amendment to block arms sales to the Saudi unit allegedly involved in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and an amendment regarding relations between the United States and the United States. Colombia.

Ocasio-Cortez’s office announced that the amendment regarding the sale of arms to Israel was intended to “block the transfer of the same type of Boeing weapons that the Israeli government used to kill 44 Palestinians overnight in al- Rimal ”- referring to an Israeli airstrike on Hamas’s underground network that may have inadvertently led to a building collapse that killed 44 Gazans.

Ambassador to the United States and the UN Gilad Erdan criticized Ocasio-Cortez for his new amendment on Sunday, saying he “would expect a congressman to understand that Israel is standing up for its citizens against Hamas “.

“Your amendment further legitimizes their heinous attacks on innocent civilians, as well as the anti-Semitic lies,” Erdan wrote on Twitter. “Israel is a world leader in the fight against terrorism, and our partnership has helped prevent terrorist attacks against American citizens,” the ambassador added.

The Biden administration approved the $ 725 million sale of JDAM to Israel in May as Israel and Gaza battled in Operation Guardian of the Walls, according to The Washington Post. Congress was officially notified of the sale about a week before the fighting broke out.

During the fighting, US President Joe Biden expressed his support for Israel, saying that “I hope and hope this will close sooner rather than later, but Israel has the right to defend itself.”

The MP, along with a number of other House Democrats, including Rashida Tlaib, introduced a similar resolution soon after, amid a conflict between Gaza and Israel.

“For decades, the United States has sold billions of dollars in weapons to Israel without ever forcing them to respect basic Palestinian rights. In doing so, we have directly contributed to the death, displacement and deprivation of the vote of millions of people, ”Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement in May. “At a time when so many people, including President Biden, are supporting a ceasefire, we should not be sending ‘direct attack’ weapons to [then] Prime Minister Netanyahu to prolong this violence.

The May resolution was endorsed by more than 70 organizations, including IfNotNow, Jewish Voice for Peace Action, and Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
